Johnson City, Tenn. (October 18, 2002) - East Tennessee State University's women's soccer team dropped a tough 1-0 battle to Southern Conference opponent Western Carolina Friday night.
The first period proved to be an offensive struggle for both teams as the period ended scoreless. The game-winning goal came in the 57th minute as Western Carolina's Lauren Bramlett received a pass from Kelly Barker and shot the ball through the out stretched hands of Buccaneer keeper Heather Sanden (Manassas, Va.).
Western Carolina out shot East Tennessee State 21-9. Sanden recorded nine saves on the night, but the most impressive was a diving save, by the ETSU junior, off of a Catamount penalty kick.
"We played the last quarter of the game with passion and drive and hopefully that will carry into Sunday's game against Chattanooga," said Buccaneer head coach Heather Henson.
With the win the Catamounts move to 7-4-2, 4-1-2 in conference play. ETSU falls to 5-7-1, 2-4-1 in the conference. The Buccaneers will return to action Sunday October 20, at home against Chattanooga at 2:00. Western Carolina will travel to Appalachian State for the 2:00 start.
