JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. (April 16, 2014) – For the second year in a row and for the third time in seven seasons, the ETSU women’s golf team has earned the top spot in the Atlantic Sun Conference.

Forced to complete a suspended second round as well as the regularly schedule third round Wednesday afternoon at the Jekyll Island Golf Club’s Pine Lakes Course, the Buccaneers overcame those challenges and were led by sophomore Vivienne Chin (Kota Kinabalu, Sabah Malaysia), who captured the top spot individually thanks to an overall score of 3-over-par 219 (74-72-73). While Chin won by two strokes over Jacksonville’s Jessica Walsh, the Bucs – who have now won titles in 2008, 2013 and 2014 – enjoyed a seven-stroke cushion over second place Kennesaw State in the team competition.

While Chin captured the individual title, it was a complete team effort. Both junior Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) and freshman Linda Dobele (Ogre, Latvia) tied for seventh individually, while senior Lourdes Lopez (Cadiz, Spain) and senior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) finished tie for 12th and 18th, respectively.

ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, who has led to 45th-ranked Bucs to each of their three championships in program history, said the weather was a major obstacle this week.

“This team showed such patience yesterday and today in these conditions,” said Shelton, referring to the rains that forced the postponement of yesterday’s second round. “We started making birdies in our final nine holes and pulled away from the field. I’m so proud of the tremendous year from every individual on this team. Winning this championship again was a goal and the girls stepped up when it was time.

“Vivienne has such a mature confidence in her game now. To say I am proud of her is an understatement as I am honored to have her as our team leader for the next two years.”

Chin was overcome with excitement.

“I can’t believe I just won,” said Chin, who became the fourth Buccaneer to win an A-Sun individual women’s golf title. “I am super happy, but I’m even happier that the team won conference again. The golf course played difficult today, but I was able to control my game. I was so focused today on hitting fairways and greens, and remaining calm.”

The Bucs will wait to learn where they will go to play in the NCAA Regionals next month. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the postseason, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
