OXFORD, Miss. (April 5, 2013) – Senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa) fired a career-best round of 5-under-par 67 to tie for first place on the individual leaderboard and lead the ETSU women’s golf team during first round play Friday in the Rebel Intercollegiate at the Ole Miss Golf Course.

Playing in their final regular season tournament before the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships later this month, Garner and sophomore Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) powered the Bucs to a strong score of 2-over-par 290 as the squad finished fourth on the team leaderboard heading into Saturday’s second round of action.

While Garner is tied for first, Wahl carded a score of 1-under-par 71 to finish tied for eighth. Garner is atop the leaderboard with Baylor’s Hayley Davis and Tulane’s Madison Opfer, while as a team the Bucs are just six strokes back of first place and No. 49 Coastal Carolina.

ETSU is currently ahead of teams such as No. 29 LSU, No. 34 Kentucky and No. 20 Tulane.

“This was Chloe’s lowest round ever and I’m proud she was wearing the blue and gold colors when she did it,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. “We posted a great score as a team today, with Chloe and Gabriella stepping up and playing great. They played with a lot of confidence and patience today. I’m so proud of them. It was a great day for the Bucs.”
