Muehl posts record score, ties for first on leaderboard
Tuesday, March 01, 2011
MIAMI, Fla. (March 1, 2011) - Senior Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) posted the day's overall low round with a 4-under-par 68 and finished in a tie for first place on the individual leaderboard, powering the ETSU women's golf team's efforts Tuesday in the third and final round of the Sir Pizza Cards Challenge at the Weston Hills Country Club.
Muehl and South Florida's Shena Yang went to a playoff to determine the tournament winner, and after both posted birdies on the first extra hole, Yang's par on the second was good enough to best the Buccaneer senior. Even so, Muehl ended the tournament at 4-under-par 212 (73-71-68), which is a personal best and school record for three-round score.
"I was really happy with the way I played throughout the tournament, but I just missed that last putt on the low side - next time I'll be smarter," Muehl said. "To set the school record is special. I'm glad I was able to do that."
Muehl broke her own record, which she set last season in the NCAA East Regional. At that event back in May, she finished with a 3-under-par 213.
As a team, the Buccaneers ended the tournament in ninth place, ahead of programs such as South Florida, Cincinnati, Mississippi State, Kansas State and UNC-Wilmington. Texas State won the event by four strokes over Florida International, which entered the day as the team leader.
Other ETSU results included a final round 74 from freshman Sian Evans (Gillingham, England), while junior Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) posted an even-par 72. Evans finished the event tied for 15th, while Vizcarrondo tied for 52nd.
The ETSU women will return to action at the Myrtle Beach Invitational March 6. For more on ETSU women's golf, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women's golf link.
