Bucs' Muehl opens play at NCAA Championships

Tuesday, May 18, 2010

WILMINGTON, N.C. (May 18, 2010) - ETSU sophomore Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) opened play Tuesday in the NCAA Championships, posting a first round score of 5-over-par 77 to finish tied for 87th on the individual leaderboard at the Country Club of Landfall.

Muehl, who is ranked 59th nationally and is the first-ever ETSU woman golfer to participate in the championships, still has three more rounds to make up ground in the finals. After watching her post an NCAA-best 64 last week in the NCAA regionals, ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton is not concerned about Muehl's ability to bounce back.

"Nina didn't hit as many greens as she is used to today, but she had a great practice after playing and is ready for what tomorrow brings," ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton said. "After last week, she knows how great it feels when it all comes together and she is striving for that each day. She will get another chance tomorrow."

Muehl started the event on the back nine, posting three pars to open before a double bogey at the 13th and a bogey on the 14th put her at 3-over. Another pair of pars was followed by another bogey on the 17th, but she birdied her final hole on the front nine to post a 39. On her second nine, Muehl was more consistent but a pair of bogeys on the 3rd and 7th holes left her with a 38 to finish at 77 on the day.

The first round lead was shared by three players who posted 5-under-par 67. No. 3-ranked Jennifer Song of Southern California, No. 7 Jennifer Johnson on Arizona State and No. 20 Maude-Aimee LeBlanc are all at the top of the leaderboard.

Second round action will begin again early Wednesday morning. Fans can stay up-to-date with Muehl's progress by visiting Golfstat.com for live scoring, and ETSUBucs.com will provide a complete wrap up after each day's action.
