Bucs play without senior Sinead O'Sullivan due to illness
GREENVILLE, N.C. (Oct. 20, 2009) - With one player out due to illness, the ETSU women's golf team was unable to keep pace with the leaders during the final round of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate Tuesday at the Greenville Country Club.
The Bucs fired a final round score of 305, which dropped them from a tie for first when the day started to a final finish of third. The Bucs were led by senior Kennie Leigh Eisenhower (Newport) and sophomore Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain), both of whom posted the team's best finishes of the tournament, ending the event tied for 11th.
"With Sinead (O'Sullivan) out with the flu and playing with just four players, it really presented a challenge for us today against two very good teams," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. "I was really proud of the way our team fought though, and the play of Kennie Leigh and Mayte was very encouraging. We weren't able to hold onto the lead today, but with a healthy team next week we look forward to another opportunity to win."
While the Bucs finished 13 strokes back of team champion Georgia State, and both Eisenhower and Vizcarrondo ended the event at 222 - 11 strokes back of individual champion Tara McFadden of Elon - ETSU was still able to post a quality Top 3 finish and build some momentum heading into their final tournament of the fall season next week at the Edwin Watts-Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C.
Other ETSU results included a tie for 21st by senior Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia), while sophomore Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) finished tied for 24th.
The Bucs will return to play beginning on Monday, Oct. 26th in the Edwin Watts-Palmetto Intercollegiate. ETSUBucs.com will provide a complete wrap up at the conclusion of play each day.
