ETSU women hold lead after two rounds at Palmetto
Monday, October 26, 2009
KIAWAH ISLANDS, S.C (Oct. 26, 2009) - The ETSU women's golf team fired a tournament-low 289 in the first round and followed that effort with a 294 in the second to lead after 36 holes of the 2009 Palmetto Intercollegiate Monday at the Oak Point Golf Course.
The Buccaneers, who lead Atlantic Coast Conference member Maryland by three strokes, got outstanding individual performances from senior Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) and sophomore Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria). O'Sullivan finished the day in second place on the individual leaderboard, six strokes back of leader Jessie Hollandsworth of Maryland, while Muehl finished tied for third and is one stroke back of O'Sullivan.
"I was really proud of our entire team today, but especially the play of Sinead and Nina," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. "We enjoy playing in this tournament and I think that showed again today. We've positioned ourselves for a chance to win again, and hopefully we can play well tomorrow."
Along with O'Sullivan and Muehl, ETSU sophomore Mayte Vizcarrondo (Cadiz, Spain) posted a strong performance as well, finishing tied for 16th, while seniors Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) and Kennie Leigh Eisenhower (Newport) ended the day tied for 33rd and 37th, respectively.
Third and final round play in the Palmetto Intercollegiate will continue on Tuesday. ETSUBucs.com will have a complete wrap up following the action.
