ETSU women's golf opens season with sixth place finish
Tuesday, February 17, 2009
SAN DIEGO, Calif. (Feb. 17, 2009) - While treacherous conditions caused for a difficult second round Monday, the ETSU women's golf team rebounded for another solid showing in the third and final round of the Aztec Spring Invitational Tuesday at the Salt Creek Golf Course.
The Buccaneers finished tied for sixth with host San Diego State and No. 43 Long Beach State, ending the event 26 strokes off the pace of team champion and No. 28-ranked San Jose State. ETSU did best No. 30 Colorado on the team leaderboard, as the Buffaloes finished ninth. Individually, junior Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) paced the Bucs with a tie for 12th after finishing the event with an 11-over-par 227, nine strokes back of individual champion Hillary Packard from UC Irvine.
"Yesterday we played in 35 mph winds and a downpour," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. "But I'm really proud of how we came back today in the final round to shoot 302. Beating Colorado and tying with Long Beach State is also something to build on for us. Coming back like that after all the challenges on Monday was good to see."
Along with Jansone's consistently strong play throughout, freshman newcomer Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) matched senior Lucy Gould (Bargoed, Wales) for the Bucs' best rounds of the day, as the two posted 2-over-par 74. Muehl finished the event tied for 28th, while Gould and junior Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland) both finished tied for 34th.
The Bucs will continue with their spring season on Feb. 22 when they travel to Kiawah Island, S.C., for the Kiawah Island Women's Intercollegiate. Visit ETSUBucs.com throughout the spring for updates on the women's golf program as they progress through the season.
