Monday, February 23, 2009
KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (Feb. 23, 2009) - Two rounds into the Kiawah Island Classic, the ETSU women's golf team finds itself at the doorstep of the tournament's top spot.
Firing a second round team score of 306 Monday at the Oak Point Golf Club, the Buccaneers are just one stroke back of team leader Miami heading into Tuesday's third and final round. ETSU is currently ahead of ranked teams such as No. 27 Florida, No. 28 Oregon, No. 34 Mississippi, No. 40 UCF and No. 45 Kentucky. Individually, the Bucs were led by junior Sinead O'Sullivan (Galway, Ireland), who posted a team-best 1-over-par 73 to move into a tie for fourth place on the leaderboard.
"I can't say enough about how well our team has played in the first two rounds of this event," said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton. "It's important though for us to stay consistent and bring this same level of play tomorrow. It will take four quality scores again to make a run at the top."
O'Sullivan is currently just one stroke back of the top spot on the individual leaderboard, which is held by a trio of players that include UCF's Elisa Aoki, Nebraska's Mary Kate Bird and Florida's Jessica Yadloczky. Along with O'Sullivan, the Bucs placed a second player in the Top 10, as freshman Nina Muehl (Vienna, Austria) finished the day with a 4-over 76 and is tied for ninth.
Other ETSU results included a tie for 21st for junior Laura Jansone (Jurmala, Latvia) and a tie for 77th from senior Lucy Gould (Bargoed, Wales).
