FLORENCE, Ind. (Oct. 14, 2012) – Dealing with difficult weather conditions that included wind gusts in excess of 30 mph, the ETSU women’s golf team improved by three spots on the team leaderboard and ultimately finished sixth following Sunday’s third and final round play in the Hoosier Fall Invitational at the Belterra Resort.
Junior Sian Evans (Gillingham, England) led the way for the Buccaneers, carding a 4-over-par 76 on Sunday and finishing tied for 15th individually. Evans’ sophomore teammate Gabriella Wahl (Heidenheim, Germany) ended the day in 17th.
“This was a challenging course and the wind did not make it any easier,” said ETSU head coach Stefanie Shelton, whose team entered the final round tied for ninth. “We fought back to a sixth place finish and I was proud of that. The girls are looking forward to getting some mental rest now, and we will enjoy the challenge in Kiawah Island at the end of the month.”
Wisconsin took the team title in an unusual manner after an Indiana player signed an incorrect scorecard, handing the Badgers a two-stroke victory over the host Hoosiers. Meanwhile, Lindsay Danielson of Indiana bested Minnesota’s Carmen Laguna by four strokes to take the individual championship.
Other ETSU results included a tie for 26th by senior Chloe Garner (Somerset West, South Africa), while junior Larissa Steinfeldt (Eschweiler, Germany) finished tied for 57th.
The Bucs will return to action for their final tournament of the fall season on Oct. 28 at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C. For more on ETSU women’s golf throughout the 2012-13 season, visit ETSUBucs.com and click on the women’s golf link.
