JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Aug. 12, 2011) – With the cross country season hovering around the corner, ETSU head coach David E. Walker announced the 2011 schedule on Friday morning.
The Bucs will appear in four meets prior to competing for their first A-Sun title since the men’s team hoisted the crown in 2009. Overall, the Blue and Gold will compete in three meets in Boone, N.C., while testing the terrain once in Louisville, Ky. and Nashville, Tenn.
ETSU begins the year at the Covered Bridge Open on September 2, while returning back to Boone two weeks later to run in the Mountaineer Open on Sept. 16.
From there, the first weekend in October sends the Blue and Gold to Louisville to race the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic, and a third trip to Boone is in store for the Bucs on Oct. 14 when coach Walker’s crew competes in the Blue Ridge Open. A second option is in the mix the same weekend as a NCAA National Preview meet is scheduled to be run on Oct. 16 in Terre Haute, Ind.
After the start of the calendar month sends ETSU to Louisville, the end of October will crown the conference champion as the A-Sun Championship returns to Nashville for the first time since 2007. The Vaughn’s Gap Cross Country Course serves as host of the 2011 conference championship on Oct. 29th.
Following the A-Sun Championship, the NCAA Regional will be contested on November 12 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., while the National Championships will be raced on Nov. 21 in Terre Haute.
Also, on Thursday, the A-Sun unveiled its Preseason Coaches Poll and the Buccaneer men were tabbed fifth – which is one spot higher than their placing at last year’s conference championship. Kennesaw State, the reigning conference champion, was picked first; while Belmont (second) and North Florida (third) rounded out the top three. On the women’s side, North Florida, Lipscomb, and Jacksonville were picked first, second, and third (in the exact order listed) and the Lady Bucs were selected ninth, ahead of Stetson.
