MARYVILLE, Tenn. (November 17, 2002) - East Tennessee State University's David Haefner (Hamburg, NY) finished 16th at the NCAA South Region Cross Country Championships as the Buccaneers struggled overall Saturday. Haefner finished the 10k race in 33:03.25 to lead East Tennessee State to a tenth place finish overall. Sophomore Bradley Yewer (Newbury, England) placed 46th with a time of 33:56.09 followed by James Grufferty (Glanmire, Ireland) who finished 64th (34:28.70). "I was happy with the way David ran today, but overall we have to learn how to compete at a higher level," said Buccaneer head coach Dave Walker. On the women's side it was a disappointing day as the Buccaneers finished 15th overall. Junior Emily Chaney (Maryville, Tenn.) was the top ETSU finisher placing 77th (24:42.57) followed by Katie Marshall (Metuchen, N.J.) who finished 86th with a time of 25:04:46. "This was a disappointing way to finish the season after running well at conference, but it shows how much we need to improve and develop," said Buccaneer assistant coach Michelle Byrne. Tennessee swept the competition finishing first in both the women and men's races.
