JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 3, 2012) – The ETSU women’s basketball team used four Lady Bucs scoring in double-digits to defeat Carson-Newman, 82-52, in ETSU’s first exhibition game of the year at MSHA Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) led the way for the Lady Bucs by scoring a game-high 21 points and added 15 rebounds and five assists. Serena Clark (Tucker, Ga.) added 16 points with nine rebounds and three steals.  Brianna McQueen (Jonesboro, Ga.) tallied 12 points while Maria Bond (Macon, Ga.) registered 10 of her own.

The Lady Eagles scored the first point of the game and would never lead again in the contest. ETSU’s stout defense helped the Lady Bucs go on a 25-4 run with 7:49 left in the first-half. A pair of free throws by Bond with 2:24 left in the period gave ETSU a 24 point lead, 33-9, for the largest lead in the half. The Lady Bucs held Carson-Newman to 16-percent shooting, 4-25, to take a 35-15 lead in to halftime.

Shyra Brown scored on Carson-Newman’s first possession of the second-half to cut the Bucs lead to 18, but the Eagles wouldn’t get any closer than 20 points. The Lady Bucs’ largest lead of 31 points came with 8:29 left on a Imani Martinez (Annandale, N.J.) layup.  The Lady Eagles tried to surge back by cutting the lead to 20 points, 71-51, with 3:23 to go, but the Lady Bucs used an 11-1 run to end the game, 82-52.

Carson-Newman’s Tatum Burstrom led the team with 14 points, followed by Jai Jai McLaughlin with nine.

The Lady Bucs return to action on Monday when they face off with Young Harris at 7 p.m. at the Dome for their final exhibition game.
