Lady Bucs go for third straight win Wednesday night against USC Upstate

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 25, 2011) - The ETSU women's basketball team will be eyeing its third straight win Wednesday night when the Lady Bucs host USC Upstate. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.

The five-game homestand has treated the Lady Bucs nicely thus far as they knocked off Lipscomb by 31 on Saturday and ETSU followed that up with a 58-49 win over Belmont Monday evening. With the pair of wins over the two Nashville schools, the Lady Bucs pushed their record over the .500 plateau (10-9, 7-3) - moving ETSU back into second-place in the conference standings.

Wednesday night may be a historic one for the Blue and Gold as seniors Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and Latisha Belcher (Martinsville, Va.) are nearing the prestigious 1,000-point club. Belcher is three points away from becoming the 18th Lady Buccaneer player to reach the club and Davis 15 points shy of the grouping as well. Should the tandem accomplish the feat tomorrow, it would mark only the fourth time in NCAA history this has been accomplished. Virginia Commonwealth's Krystal Vaughn and Quanitra Hollingsworth both scored their 1,000th point on Jan. 14, 2008 vs. Old Dominion, while fellow Ram teammates D'Andra Moss and Kita Waller accomplished the task against ODU last year. Florida's Rhvonja Smith and Sophia Witherspoon became the first duo to score their 1,000th point in the same game versus Alabama-Huntsville on Dec. 13, 1990 (Research provided by Randy Peterson, Kansas State).

The Spartans won't be an easy opponent for the Lady Bucs as USC Upstate defeated ETSU, 78-70, back on Dec. 4 in Spartanburg. ETSU led by 14 points with 13:41 remaining in the contest, but the Spartans rallied back for the eight-point win. Davis was held to only five points and turned the ball over nine times before fouling out in 25 minutes of work, while freshman Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.) paced the Blue and Gold with 23 points and 10 rebounds.

USC Upstate (10-8, 6-3) has won three straight after dropping three in a row to Stetson, North Florida and Jacksonville. Like the Lady Bucs, the Spartans swept both Belmont and Lipscomb over the weekend as Upstate defeated the Lady Bisons 77-70 Monday night. Preseason Player of the Year selection Chelsea McMillan scored 23 points and pulled down 16 rebounds, while reigning freshman of the year Tee'Ara Copney added 19 points, six rebounds and six assists in the win over Lipscomb. Copney was also named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Tuesday after averaging 18.7 points, six rebounds and 5.3 assists.

The Lady Bucs lead the all-time series 5-2; however, the Spartans have won two of the last three meetings. ETSU has won all three meetings in Johnson City - including an 88-67 win last Feb. 22.

ETSU students who attend Wednesday's game have the chance to sign up and register for the chance to win $50 cash. The winner will be announced during the second half and you have to be in attendance to be eligible for the prize. Also, students who sign up at every home game will have a chance to win a prize pack at the end of the season.

Fans unable to make the trip to the Dome can listen to all the action on WXSM-AM 640 as Voice of the Lady Bucs John Stevens will carry the play-by-play. Live video streaming will also be available on A-Sun.TV, while live stats will be offered via Gametracker.
