ETSU, Appalachian State kick off homecoming weekend inside ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Nov. 18, 2010) - Typically the number 13 is cursed with bad luck; however, the ETSU women's basketball team looks to reverse the curse as the Lady Bucs put their 12-game home winning streak on the line Friday night against old SoCon rival Appalachian State. Tip is set for 7 p.m. inside the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center.

The Lady Bucs, who are 2-0 for the first time since the 1999-2000 season, were ranked 16th when the updated CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 Poll came out Tuesday evening. ETSU began the year with a 77-60 victory at Chattanooga, and the Lady Bucs followed things up with a 96-84 win over Richmond Sunday afternoon. The win over the Spiders was ETSU's twelfth consecutive home victory, marking the longest stretch in program history.

ETSU has been led by the strong play of senior point guard Tara Davis (Murfreesboro, Tenn.) and freshman Destiny Mitchell (Bluffton, Ga.). Davis is averaging 25 points, seven assists and five rebounds in 36.5 minutes of action, while Mitchell is averaging a double-double (16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds). Davis was recognized for her efforts as she was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mitchell who has impressed the Lady Buccaneer faithful through her first two games so far, was snubbed by the league as Belmont's Molly Ernst was named Newcomer of the Week.

Appalachian State has won two of its first three games to start the year, but the Mountaineers are coming off an 88-78 setback at Richmond Wednesday night. The Mountaineers defeated Marshall (64-55) and Campbell (84-67) to begin the season in tournament at Longwood.

The Mountaineers are led by senior guard Sam Ramirez (17.7ppg), while sophomore post Ashlen Dewart is averaging 13.7 points and 5.7 rebounds. Appalachian State, who was picked second in the preseason coaches poll, is averaging 75.3 points and shooting 48.9 percent from the field (91-186).

Friday's game marks the 64th meeting in the series as these teams have met at least once since the 1978-79 season. Both teams have defended their home floor in the rivalry as the Lady Bucs haven't lost to the Mountaineers in Johnson City since Appalachian State defeated ETSU, 76-65, back on Feb. 8, 2003.

Fans who enter the gates with two canned food items will receive a special $1 ticket incentive as all the proceeds benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. Also, the first 300 fans will receive a limited edition giveaway - courtesy of Johnson City Honda - while free tailgate festivities begin at 6 p.m. In addition, students have the opportunity to sign up and win $50 cash.

Those who cannot attend the game Friday can catch all the action online via ASun.TV. Fans in the Tri-Cities area can also listen to the broadcast as "Voice of the Lady Bucs" John Stevens will carry the play-by-play on WXSM-AM 640 The Sports Monster. Live stats will also be provided on Gametracker.
