Lady Bucs look to close out road swing on a high note Saturday
Friday, January 08, 2010
MACON, Ga. (Jan. 8, 2010) - The ETSU women's basketball team looks to close out its season-long five-game road swing on a high note on Saturday afternoon when the Lady Bucs take on Mercer. Tip is set for 1 p.m. inside the University Center.
ETSU (5-7, 3-1) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 90-59 win at Kennesaw State on Thursday afternoon. Junior Tarita Gordon (Wichita, Kan.) made the most of her first Lady Buccaneer start, as the point guard finished with a game-high 21 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds in only 25 minutes of work.
The Lady Bucs began this difficult road trip with three straight losses to No. 16 Vanderbilt, No. 7 North Carolina and conference foe USC Upstate. However, closing the trip out with a win against their conference rival will keep the Lady Bucs one-game back of league leading Florida Gulf Coast.
A year ago Mercer ruined the Lady Bucs' chances of at least clinching a share of the regular season A-Sun title, as the Bears defeated ETSU twice. Fortunately, for the Lady Bucs, they got the last laugh, with ETSU knocking Mercer out of the conference semifinals in Nashville. ETSU shot 54 percent from the floor in that tournament game - with four players scoring in double figures - including TaRonda Wiles (Danville, Va.) leading the way with 22 points, five rebounds and four assists in the 82-60 victory back on March 6.
Meanwhile, Mercer (7-7, 4-1) is coming off a 64-52 victory over Campbell on Thursday afternoon in Macon. Sophomore Lacy Ramon recorded her first career double-double in the 12-point win, as the post player finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds. In addition, Courtney Ford, who ranks second behind Wiles (20.7ppg) in scoring, ended with a team-high 17 points.
As a team, Mercer is averaging 68.4 points per game in five conference games, while allowing 60 points to the opposition. The Bears' lone league loss was a 72-57 setback at Jacksonville last weekend.
Fans unable to make the trip to Georgia can listen to all the action live, as "Voice of the Bucs" Jay Sandos will handle the play-by-play duties. Fans in Johnson City should tune into WKPT-AM (1590), WOPI-AM (1490) in Bristol, WKPT-AM (1400) in Kingsport. In addition, 94.3-FM in Kingsport, 97.9-FM in Bristol, and 97.7-FM in Johnson City will carry the game. Live video streaming is also available through ASun.TV and live stats will be offered through Mercer athletics.
