Wednesday, January 30, 2008
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Jan. 30, 2008) - Help make history this Saturday afternoon when the ETSU women's basketball team hosts the Kennesaw State Lady Owls at 2 p.m. inside Memorial Center. The Lady Buccaneers are looking to break their all-time attendance mark of 1,117 fans, which was set last season versus
This season the NCAA has challenged all 32 women's basketball conferences to a "Pack the House" night, and the ETSU marketing department and Mountain States Health Alliance have teamed up to create the slogan "02-02 at 2: Two Teams, One Fight...Women against Heart Disease," which aligns with the Lady Buccaneer/Kennesaw State contest on Feb. 2 at 2 p.m. inside Memorial Center.
The competition began Jan. 1 and runs through Feb. 17, and the object is to come up with a creative marketing plan and sellout or increase your previous year's single-game record attendance. The Lady Bucs have registered for the challenge and will look to sellout or break last season's mark of 1,117 fans when they play host to the Lady Owls.

The special day kicks off with a "Go Red Dress Event" at noon inside Memorial Center (in the BASA Lounge), followed by the tip between the Lady Bucs and Kennesaw State where the ETSU players, staff and fans will be wearing red to show their support for heart disease. After the game, the ETSU women's basketball team will host a free basketball clinic for children in attendance from 4:15 p.m. through 5:30 p.m.
"ETSU is thrilled to have this wonderful opportunity to team up with Mountain States Health Alliance and help with the fight of women against heart disease," added Marketing and Promotions Coordinator Sara Hacker. "We believe this will be a very memorable day as we honor and educate women who have either battled heart disease or known someone that has. This is a perfect way to plan the event with our Lady Buccaneer game against
Below is a breakdown each event:
THE RED DRESS LUNCHEON - The luncheon kicks off the festivities at noon on the floor of
Then, William Walker, MD and cardiac surgeon will give a brief presentation on the subject of heart disease and what people, especially women, need to do to prevent or fight it. Some of the ETSU athletics staff and coaches will be in attendance. Other dignitaries expected include MSHA President and CEO Dennis Vonderfecht and ETSU President Dr. Paul E. Stanton, Jr. Part of the $15 registration fee (which helps cover the cost of the food) will go towards the purchase of the Automatic External Defibrillators (AED).
During the luncheon those in attendance will be able to buy a hardback cookbook from MSHA which raises also money for AEDs.
THE GAME - Both ETSU and MSHA are helping the Lady Bucs "Pack the House" to set a new attendance record for the women. Every dollar of the $2 admission ticket (keeping that 2 theme going) will go towards the purchase of an Automatic External Defibrillator (AED). Our goal is to have over 3,000 people to attend and as the Lady Bucs are supporting women in the fight against heart disease, this is one game where they will be wearing red laces in their shoes. The crowd will be encouraged to wear red and will receive a miniature red basketball as a souvenir for the day. During halftime, the models and ETSU men's basketball team will come out onto the court, be introduced to the crowd with a mini version of the "RED DRESS" fashion show, again, raising the awareness of heart disease in women.
AFTER THE GAME - The Lady Bucs will hold a free clinic for children. This FREE clinic is designed to help kids master the skills of basketball with the guidance of their favorite Lady Buccaneer players.
AFTER THE EVENT - The dollars will be totaled to determine how many AEDs can be purchased. MSHA and ETSU will then determine the needy organizations and places for the AEDs. We will hold an event to present those AEDs.
