Mayes named Southern Conference Player of the Week

Friday, December 26, 2003

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (Dec. 26, 2003) -- East Tennessee State junior Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) has been selected the Southern Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for December 23. Mayes, a 6-foot-2 center, led the Lady Bucs to two conference wins last week, taking ETSU to 3-1 in league action this year, the team's best conference start since the 1994-95 season. Mayes started the week with 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 64-54 win over Elon on December 18. Mayes then recorded a career-high 24 points and 15 boards while picking up four steals, to lead ETSU to a 74-68 win over Wofford on December 20. Mayes is, without question, off to her best season in a Lady Buc uniform, leading the SoCon in rebounding (9.8 rpg.) and is ETSU's leading scorer (15.6 ppg.). She has led the team in scoring eight times this season, in helping ETSU to a 3-6 record overall. The Player of the Week award caps off an already successful month for Mayes. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the Provident Bank Invitational hosted by Xavier back on Dec. 6-7. East Tennessee State will be back in action on Dec. 30, when the Lady Bucs host Georgia Southern. Game time is set for 7 p.m. in Memorial Center.
