Davidson defeats Buccaneers, 70-57
Saturday, February 22, 2003The Davidson women's basketball team downed East Tennessee State Saturday afternoon, 70-57. The victory pushes Davidson's record to 12-13 overall and 7-9 in the SoCon while ETSU falls to 8-17 and 5-11. Davidson burst out of the gates, scoring the first nine points of the contest. A three pointer by sophomore Emily Callahan midway through the period gave Davidson its biggest lead of the day at 13, 22-9. However, East Tennessee State used 15 offensive rebounds in the opening period to hang around. The visiting Bucs slowly chipped away at the deficit and were able to claw within 35-29 at the break. ETSU quickly got to within one at the start of the second half thanks to a trifecta by Kiya Verdell (Hartwell, Ga.) followed by a Misty Copas (Kingsport, Tenn.) layup. Callahan managed to jumpstart Davidson's offense with a jumper at 18:05 to keep Davidson ahead. On the Wildcats' next possession, Schott came up with one of her five baskets on the day to extend the Davidson advantage back up to five. After ETSU's Jessica Lonon (Sylvania, Ga.) made a jumper to bring the Bucs back to within three, 39-36, with 16:34 remaining, Davidson reeled off a 9-0 run to pull away for good. Freshman Janell Crayton keyed the stretch with her only three pointer of the game. Callahan led all scorers with 25 points. It was the sixth time this year the forward has posted at least 20 points in a contest. Junior Ashley Hallsted chipped in with seven points and a game-high five assists. For the Bucs, Lonon and Tiffani Mayes (Sumter, S.C.) each tallied 12 points. Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.) was one point shy of a double-double as the forward registered nine points and 11 rebounds. The Buccaneers travel to Furman for their final road game of the regular season on Feb. 24, at 7 p.m.
