College of Charleston Gets Past Lady Bucs, 62-56

Tuesday, January 08, 2002

Charleston, S.C. (Jan. 8, 2002) - Becky Wollenberg scored a season-high 18 points and Jennifer Harper added a career-high 10 rebounds to lead the College of Charleston to a 62-56 win over the East Tennessee State Buccaneers in Southern Conference women's basketball action this afternoon at the John Kresse Arena. The win takes the Cougars to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference. It also gives Charleston a 7-1 record at home. The loss is the Lady Buccaneers third straight and gives them a 7-7 record, 2-3 in the SoCon. The first half was as close as the 28-25 halftime score indicated with Charleston just edging East Tennessee State in shooting percentage with a 44.4 to 39.3 difference. ETSU tied the game early second half on two straight field goals from Samantha Copeland (Evansville, Tenn.) that tied the game at 30. Megan Jackson (Paris, Tenn.) then scored the next four points for the Lady Bucs as they edged into a 34-32 lead. With ETSU leading 39-38 with 13:01 left in the game Rachel King would nail the go ahead jumper to start a 15-0 run by the Cougars that ended with the lead stretched to 52-38. The Lady Buccaneers cut the lead to four with as little as 15 seconds left, but clutch free-throws by Shanna Mickens would take the lead back to six and out of reach with less than 11 seconds to play. Aside from Wollenberg's 18 points Rachel King and Patrice Bryant paced with eight points apiece. Jackson led East Tennessee State with 18 points, with Lauren Trantham (Asheville, N.C.) netting a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Copeland was the only other Lady Buccaneer in double-figures with 11 points. ETSU was hampered by some poor outside shooting, hitting on just one of 15 three-point attemtps. The Cougars held a slight edge in overall shooting, .390 to .373 and also outrebounded the Lady Bucs, 42-35. East Tennessee State travels to Western Carolina Jan. 12th, for a 2:00 PM contest while the College of Charleston takes the trip to Appalachian State for a Jan. 12th, contest at 1:00 PM.
