JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Feb. 20, 2014) – ETSU volleyball standout Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) will travel to Colorado Springs, Colo., this weekend to attend an open tryout for the U.S. Women’s National Volleyball Team. The tryouts take place Feb. 21-23, in Sports Center II at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC).

Devine, the 2012 Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Year, three-time First Team All A-Sun selection and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention, will be one of a record-setting 246 participants to attend this weekend’s tryout. The Kingsport, Tenn. native is one of 61 outside hitters in the field, while ETSU will be one of 107 collegiate programs represented in the U.S. Olympic Training Center.

“I’m excited for this opportunity to be playing with the top players in the country,” said Devine. “This is an invaluable experience as I’ll be able to hear from the coaches on how to improve my game and learn what I need to work on in order to take my game to the next level.”  

While the Buccaneer outside hitter looks to take advantage of this event, Coach Devine knows Megan will take away a lot from making the trip to Colorado Springs.  

“There are so many positives that Megan will experience from this opportunity,” said ETSU head coach Lindsey Devine, who will also be in the U.S. Olympic Training Center this weekend. “She aspires to extend her playing career as long as she can, so to be in this gym environment with these top level players from across the country will be rewarding on many levels. Also, to play in front of a Karch Kiraly and his National Team staff will be a special once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Her team, the ETSU community and her family are very proud of her.”

Devine, the ETSU and A-Sun all-time record holder for kills (1,940), is just one of 27 participants who completed their collegiate eligibility and will be evaluated for spots on the U.S. National Team. Devine, who will wear #W51 during the tryout, will be observed by head coach and U.S. Gold Medalist Karch Kiraly and his staff this weekend.

Meanwhile, as Megan will be going head-to-head with some of top volleyball players in the country, Coach Devine will be in the Olympic Training Center this weekend acting as an evaluator. Coach Devine has already enjoyed her time working with Team USA as she spent last summer as an assistant coach for the U.S. national team that earned a silver medal at the Girls Youth World Championships in Thailand. The year prior, Devine was an assistant with U.S. Girls’ Youth Team that competed in the European Global Challenge in Pula, Croatia.
