ETSU volleyball wins third straight; Defeats Stetson, 3-1

DELAND, Fla. (October 14, 2011) – Freshman Jamie Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded a career-high for points, kills and digs to lead the ETSU volleyball to a 3-1 (25-11, 25-20, 25-27, 25-13) victory over Stetson on Friday night at the Edmonds Center.
Rutledge registered her second career double-double by dishing out a match-high 46 assists to go along with 14 digs, seven kills and three blocks. The 46 assists in the match were more than the entire Stetson team in the contest. Meanwhile, Rutledge was extremely efficient on the night by recorded her seven kills on just eight attempts for an .875 attack percentage.
ETSU moves to 10-11 overall and evened its A-Sun mark to 3-3, while Stetson falls to 5-13 and 0-6 in A-Sun play. The Bucs out-hit the Hatters .272 to .145 for the match while also recording 12 more kills and 13 more assists. ETSU is now 8-1 on the season when recording a .200 or better attack percentage.
Sophomore Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) recorded her second straight double-double and her eighth of the season with a 15 kill and 16 dig effort. Devine also added three blocks on the night. Krista Hughes (Williamsburg, Va.) joined Devine with double-digit kills as she recorded a career-high 11 kills, while also adding a career-high nine digs. Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) added eight kills on just 11 attempts to go with two service aces, three digs, a block and an assist. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the Bucs defensively with 15 digs on the night. McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) finished with a match-high five blocks, while also adding five kills for the Bucs.
ETSU jumped out to an impressive start by taking the first six points of the set to take the 6-0 lead. After Stetson cut the lead to two on a couple occasions, ETSU went on a 5-0 run with the score 10-8 to extend the advantage to 15-8. From there, the Bucs cruised to the 25-11 victory in the set. Hughes led the way for the Bucs in the set with four kills, while Tamblyn recorded nine of her 15 digs in the frame. Meanwhile, ETSU out-hit Stetson .226 to -.094.
In the second set, ETSU again grabbed the early advantage as the Bucs led by as much as seven points at 14-7. The Bucs maintained the seven point lead at 21-14, while Stetson closed the gap to four but that was as close as the Hatters would get in the frame. ETSU won the set 25-20. Rutledge dished out 11 assists and added a team-best six digs in the set to lead the Bucs.
For the third straight set, ETSU got out to an early lead as the Bucs had an 8-4 advantage. ETSU would not be able to extend the lead; however, as Stetson tied the match at 13 after a kill by Kaylee Ream. The Hatters would take the lead and eventually extend it out to 18-15. The Bucs quickly tied it up after going on a 3-0 run thanks to two kills and a block. From there the match went back and forth until a Kaley Melville kill gave Stetson set point at 24-23. The Bucs tied it up on the next point after a Stetson attack error to make the score 24-24. After more back and forth play, Stetson earned set point for the third time in the frame after a kill by Ellen Hawks. The Hatters clinched the set on the next point 27-25 on an ETSU attack error.
ETSU got off to the early start once again and this time the Bucs would not relinquish the advantage. The Bucs led by as much as eight in the early going with a 13-5 lead. ETSU never trailed in the set and coasted to a 25-13 victory in the set to clinch the match. Devine and Hardy combined for nine kills in the set to lead the way for the Bucs, while Rutledge dished out 12 assists. Meanwhile, ETSU made the fourth set its most efficient with a .414 hitting percentage, while limiting Stetson to just a .114 clip.
ETSU closes out the weekend on Saturday with a match against Florida Gulf Coast at 7 p.m. from Alico Arena.
