HARRISONBURG, Va. (September 17, 2011) – Georgetown rallied from two sets down to defeat ETSU, 3-2 (19-25, 18-25, 25-20, 25-22, 15-11), Saturday to close out the JMU Coca-Cola Classic at Sinclair Gymnasium.

With the victory, Georgetown moves to 8-5 on the season, while ETSU falls to 6-8 on the year. In addition, Georgetown finished the tournament with a perfect 3-0 record to earn the tournament title.

Five Georgetown players recorded double-digit kills led by Brooke Bachesta with 15 kills. ETSU finished the match with an advantage in almost every statistical category. Georgetown did hold a 9-3 advantage in service aces. The Bucs recorded 16 blocks in the match, while also recording an impressive .340 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) led the way for the Buccaneers by recording a game-high and equaling a season-high with 22 kills for the match, while also adding eight digs. Jamie Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) dished out 53 assists to go along with seven blocks, six digs and three kills. Rutledge was named to the all-tournament team after the impressive performance at the setter position. Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.) and Bethany Gesell (High Point, N.C.) each recorded 13 kills. Rice added seven digs and three blocks, while Gesell added two blocks. Katie Muey (Alexandria, Ind.) added 15 digs to lead the ETSU defense. Meanwhile, Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) finished with a career-high 12 blocks to go along with eight kills. Freshman Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) also added 10 kills and four blocks.

It was ETSU that broke a 4-4 tie by winning the next two points in the opening set to take a 6-4 lead. The Bucs maintained the lead until Georgetown tied the score on three different occasions the later at 14-14. ETSU answered by taking the next three points to take a 17-14 lead. The Bucs never looked back as they took the opening set, 25-19. ETSU hit well over .300 in the frame, while Devine led the charge with six kills.

The second set started very similarly to the first set as ETSU gained the early advantage. The Bucs quickly turned a 4-2 lead into a decisive 9-2 advantage following a 5-0 run. From there, ETSU never looked back, taking the set, 25-18.

Georgetown came out of the locker room motivated to begin the third set as the Hoyas jumped out to an early advantage. Georgetown never trailed in the set, but a Stancliff kill pulled the Bucs within one at 20-19. That was as close as ETSU would get as Georgetown took the next three points and eventually held on for the set victory, 25-20.

The fourth set was tight throughout as neither team could gain a decisive advantage. A block by Devine and Stancliff gave ETSU a 22-20 advantage late in the set to force a Georgetown timeout. After the timeout, the Hoyas reeled off five straight points to win the set, 25-22. Georgetown used four straight ETSU attack errors to clinch the set, forcing a deciding fifth set.

With all of the momentum on Georgetown’s side, the Hoyas jumped out to an early 5-1 advantage in the fifth set. ETSU cut the lead to two at 6-4, but the Bucs could not get any closer as Georgetown extended the lead to as much as six. The Hoyas went on to take the set and the match after an ETSU attack error made the score, 15-11.

ETSU concludes preseason tournament play and will now focus on Atlantic Sun action. The Bucs welcome conference foe USC Upstate in the home opener, Tuesday night at 7 p.m. inside Brooks Gym.
