ETSU volleyball opens preseason camp

Wednesday, August 10, 2011

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (August 10, 2011) – With the start of the 2011 campaign less than three weeks away, the ETSU volleyball team began its preparations for the upcoming season with the start of preseason camp on Tuesday afternoon.

The team officially arrived on campus Monday, while taking part in the annual team photo shoot and first practice on Tuesday. The squad closed Tuesday with a team meeting, before preparing for the start of two-a-days on Wednesday.

“The energy level of the team was pretty positive so I was impressed by that,” said ETSU head coach Lindsey Devine. “I am impressed by our freshmen because they add a new attitude and dimension to our team. With our returners being out on the court for the first time since April, I was generally pleased. With first practices, there are always nerves. The team is also adjusting to a new setter so the timing is a bit off, but overall the tone, attitude, and energy level were very impressive."

ETSU returns five letterwinners, including two starters and its libero, from a squad that advanced to its first ever trip to the Atlantic Sun Conference tournament final.  Highlighting the list of returning players are senior middle blocker Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.), senior libero Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) and sophomore outside hitter Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.).  Stancliff finished the 2010 season ranked second in the league in blocks at 1.07 per set, while Tamblyn led the team and ranked third in the A-Sun in digs with 4.20 per set.  Meanwhile, Devine was the 2010 Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year after leading the Bucs in kills and points.

The Bucs went 26-9 with a 7-3 Atlantic Sun record in 2010. The 26 wins were the most for the program since the 1978 season. In addition to the five returnees, ETSU welcomes seven highly touted newcomers to the squad.

The Buccaneers open the 2011 season against Evansville at the UNC Greensboro Tournament on August 26. ETSU will also take on UNC Greensboro, North Carolina A&T and Coastal Carolina in the two-day tournament.
