Volleyball wins sixth straight after sweeping Western Carolina 3-0

CULLOWHEE, N.C. (Oct. 27, 2010) -
ETSU recorded a season-high 10 service aces and the Bucs defeated longtime rival Western Carolina 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-22) on Wednesday night inside the Ramsey Center.
The Bucs improve to 21-6 (4-1 A-Sun) on the year, while Western Carolina falls to 6-20 on the season. ETSU has now won six straight matches and they have won 12 sets in a row.
The trio of Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.), Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.),and Summer Kremer (Mills River, N.C.)led the way for the Bucs offensively with seven kills each. Whitney Cogburn dished out a game-high 33 assists, while also recording three kills, eight digs, an ace, and a block. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) recorded a game-high 14 digs to lead the ETSU defense.
Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) finished the night with six kills, while Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) and Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) recorded five kills each. Stancliff and Long also combined for five blocks as ETSU out-blocked Western Carolina 7.0 to 5.0.
ETSU jumped out to a quick 2-0 advantage thanks to a block and a Baufield kill. Western Carolina battled back to tie and eventually take a point lead at 10-9 after a Paloma Alvarez kill. The Bucs regained the lead following consecutive kills by Ryan,Long, and Devine.ETSU later extended the lead to four, but Western rallied to cut the lead to one at 24-23, and forced an ETSU timeout. After the timeout, Devine recorded a set clinching kill as the Bucs closed the opening set with a 25-23 victory. Devine led the way for the Bucs in the set with four kills on .200 hitting.
In the second set, WCU got off to a commanding 12-3 lead. ETSU forced a Western Carolina timeout after recording five straight points to trim the lead to 12-8. Ryan recorded back to back kills during the sequence for the Bucs. Following the timeout, ETSU continued the comeback after a Long kill and block to cut the lead to one. After WCU extended their lead to 15-11, ETSU stormed back and put together a 9-1 run to take a 20-16 lead, which forced a WCU timeout.
The Bucs maintained their lead after the break and forced set point following a Long kill. However, the Catamounts won the next two points to cut the ETSU lead to one at 24-23, which forced an ETSU timeout. Following the timeout, the Bucs benefitted from a Western Carolina attack error that clinched the set 25-23. Ryan and Kremer led the way for the Bucs in the set with four kills apiece.
With a 2-0 set lead, ETSU opened the third frame with a quick 8-3 lead thanks to service aces from Cogburn and Baufield. The Bucs extended their lead to 20-12 following a Western Carolina error, which forced a timeout. The Catamounts made a run after the timeout but the Bucs held on to take the set 25-22 to close the set and match.
The Bucs are back home this weekend as they return to A-Sun play against Stetson and Florida Gulf Coast. Friday night's match against Stetson will be Dig for a Cure night for breast cancer awareness. Fans that wear pink can get in for a Buc ($1). First serve is set for 7 p.m. Saturday's match against FGCU is set for 2 p.m. and will be the Buccaneers' Senior Day.
