Sunday, October 10, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 9, 2010) -
ETSU senior Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.) tied a career-high with 16 kills to lead the Bucs past Belmont 3-2 (20-25, 25-16, 25-20, 21-25, 15-9) in a key Atlantic Sun matchup on Saturday inside Brooks Gym.
With the victory, ETSU moves to 16-6 overall and 2-1 in Atlantic Sun play, while Belmont falls to 8-13 and 2-2 in the A-Sun.
"First of all last night against Lipscomb, a team that is very well coached and extremely talented, we just did not execute," said ETSU head coach Lindsey Devine. To rebound less than 24 hours later against a very talented Belmont squad, the girls really showed the identity that I knew they were capable of."
The 16 kills from Baufield were a season-high as her previous high this season was six kills against Austin Peay. She also recorded eight digs, three blocks, three assists, and two service aces.
"Lauren was obviously an impact player and I was happy to see her to step up her game from last night. Last night she struggled a bit but I was glad to see her do the things she is capable of today."
Freshman Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) finished with her seventh double-double of the season as she totaled 10 kills and 14 digs. Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) came in with 10 kills to go along with three digs and a block. Senior setter Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) dished out a game-high 40 assists, while also recording five kills, nine digs, and four blocks.
Junior Jamie Stancliff (Advance, N.C.) provided the Bucs with a spark at the net with a game-high seven blocks, while also coming away with four kills and two digs. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) led the ETSU defensive efforts by tying a season-high with 24 digs, while also dishing out five assists.
The Bucs finished the match with 12.0 team blocks and are now a perfect 9-0 this season when recording 10 or more blocks. The Bucs also finished the match with a decisive 7-1 advantage in service aces.
After dropping the opening set 25-20, the Bucs came out strong in the second set thanks to some solid defense. ETSU held Belmont to -.03 hitting, while also recording two blocks for a 25-16 victory in the set. Ryanled the Bucs offensively in the set with four kills on nine swings.
With the match tied at a set apiece, Belmont opened the third frame with a quick 7-2 advantage. However, with the Bruins up 11-9 ETSU went on an impressive 6-0 run to take their first lead of the set 15-11. The Bucs maintained their lead and took the set 25-20. Baufield paced the Bucs in the set with four kills on just seven swings. The Bucs were also solid on the defensive end once again as they held Belmont to .027 hitting while also recording five blocks.
Both teams traded points for much of the fourth set. Then, with ETSU up 18-16, Belmont reeled off four straight points to give them the 20-18 lead. Belmont maintained the lead the rest of the way for a 25-21 victory to even the match back up.
The determining fifth set started with the Bucs jumping out to a quick 5-1 advantage. Then, with the Bucs up 7-2, Belmont won four straight points to get within one point at 7-6. Following an ETSU timeout, the Bucs reeled off four straight of their own to regain the five point lead. The Bucs then used timely kills from Baufield and Stancliff, followed by a Baufield service ace to end the set and match. The Bucs hit .333 in the set, while limiting Belmont to .000 hitting in the final frame. Baufield led the way with three kills in the fifth set.
The Bucs return to action next Friday and Saturday as they will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. to face Jacksonville and North Florida.
