ETSU travels to Radford Tournament this weekend

Thursday, September 02, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
(September 2, 2010) - After hosting its first match of the year, ETSU will head to its second tournament as they will travel to Radford, Va. for the Radford University Tournament, Friday and Saturday at the Dedmon Center.

The Bucs will take on Canisius at 7 p.m. on Friday night before battling Davidson and Norfolk State on Saturday. ETSU will take on Davidson at 10 a.m. and will conclude the tournament against Norfolk State at 5 p.m. Fans will be able to follow the action as live stats will be available during the entire weekend.

ETSU comes into the weekend with a 1-3 record on the season after dropping a heartbreaking match in its home opener to Appalachian State 3-2 (25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 17-25, 7-15) on Tuesday night. The Bucs had the undefeated Mountaineers on the ropes after taking a 2-1 set advantage, but ASU took the next two sets to take the victory.

Despite the loss, ETSU had some solid performances including a double-double from senior Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.). Cogburn had a career high 46 assists to go along with 11 digs on the night. She currently ranks seventh in the Atlantic Sun in assists. Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) led the Bucs with 13 kills on 32 attempts for a .250 hitting percentage. Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.), Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) and McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) each had double digit kills as well. Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) and Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.) also combined for 28 digs on the night. Tamblyn finished with a game-high 18 digs and she currently ranks ninth in the Atlantic Sun in digs.

Canisius enters the weekend with a 1-3 record after dropping its last three matches. The Griffins won their opening match of the season 3-1 against Hofstra in the Hofstra/Asics Invitational. Canisius then fell to Missouri State and Texas State to end the tournament. They also fell to St. Francis (N.Y.) 3-1 on Sunday afternoon. A bright spot for Canisius through four games has been the play of Samantha Good as she was recently named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week.

Davidson opened the season with a 2-1 record at the James Madison Tournament last weekend, defeating UNC Asheville and Stetson and falling to James Madison. The Wildcats were projected to finish fourth in the Southern Conference after going 9-23 during the 2009 season.

Norfolk State is 3-2 on the season after a five-set win at Hampton on Tuesday night. The Spartans split their four matches in the Spartan classic last weekend defeating Providence and Navy while falling to UNC Greensboro and Kent State. Norfolk State was picked to finish in fourth place of the Southern Division of the MEAC after going 9-22 in 2009.

After the weekend tournament, ETSU will get set to host the Buccaneer Classic on September 10 and 11 at Brooks Gym.
