WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (August 27, 2010) -
The ETSU volleyball team fell to Georgia, 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 12-25), Friday night in the opening match of the 2010 season at the Deacon Invitational.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs (1-0) was Brittany Northcutt as she totaled 10 kills on the evening. Kathleen Gates finished with a game high 33 assists. Anna Dylla finished with a game high seven blocks to go along with eight kills.

Pacing the Bucs (0-1) was senior Desiree Dyck (Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan) as she finished with nine kills while newcomer Kiley Tamblyn (Torrance, Calif.) finished with a game high 10 digs on the evening. Senior Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) quarterbacked the Bucs on offense with 19 assists, four digs and a kill.

The Bulldogs took the first set 25-19 after a back and forth start to the match.  Georgia jumped out to an early 3-0 lead but ETSU quickly responded by nodding the match at 11 apiece after a kill by Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.). The Bucs took their first lead of the contest on the very next point as McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) scored a kill to take the 12-11 lead. With the Bucs in front 19-17, Georgia reeled off eight straight points to take the opening frame.

The second set was much of the same way as both teams traded blows throughout and with Georgia up 20-18, ETSU got within one point after a Bulldog attack error, but that was as close as the set would get as Georgia would close it with a 25-21 victory. The Bulldogs closed out the match in the third set by winning 25-12.

The Bucs will continue the Deacon Invitational tomorrow as they will take on the host Wake Forest at 12:30 p.m. before closing out the tournament against defending Big South champions Coastal Carolina at 4:30 p.m.
