Thursday, August 26, 2010

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.
(August 26, 2010) - The ETSU volleyball team will open its 2010 season with three matches at the Deacon Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend.

The Bucs will open the tournament against Georgia on Friday at 4:30 p.m. The two teams have met seven times, with the Bulldogs leading the all-time series 4-3. The teams have not faced each other since 1984 when Georgia took that match 3-0. The Bulldogs finished with a 17-14 overall record last season, including an 8-12 mark in the SEC. The team returns eight letterwinners from a year ago and has added five fresh faces to the team.

ETSU is looking to win its season opening match for the first time since 2005 when the team knocked off UNC Greensboro, 3-2, in the season opener that season. Six seniors will lead the ETSU attack as they return five starters and nine letterwinners from last season.

On Saturday, the Bucs will take on Wake Forest at 12:30 p.m. before closing out the tournament against defending Big South champion, Coastal Carolina at 4:30 p.m. The Bucs are 0-2 all-time against Wake Forest, but the two teams have not faced each other since 2002 when the Demon Deacons defeated the Bucs 3-0. The Demon Deacons were 11-20 overall last season including 9-11 in the ACC. The team is returning 11 players from a year ago.

Meanwhile, ETSU and Coastal Carolina have split the all-time series with each team winning two games apiece. ETSU won the last meeting 3-0 back in 2002. The Chanticleers were pick to win the Big South for the second straight season as they finished the 2009 campaign with a 20-14 overall record including a 10-6 mark in conference play.
