Thursday, October 29, 2009
JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct. 29, 2009) - The ETSU volleyball team is set to head to Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson as the Bucs look to qualify for the Atlantic Sun tournament for the fifth straight year. The Bucs face the Eagles on Friday at 7 p.m. and finish up the road trip on Saturday at 4 p.m. at Stetson.
ETSU (8-15, 6-8 A-Sun) split a pair of matches last weekend against Mercer and Kennesaw State after defeating UNC Asheville 3-2 on the road earlier in the week. The 3-2 loss to the Owls saw a season high 68 points in the fourth set as the Bucs dropped a hard fought 3-2 match. Junior Alysa Long (Romulus, Mich.) has been on fire for the Buccaneers as she is on pace to finish in the top five of the single season hitting records with a .329 hitting percentage this season. Long has posted double-digit kills the last three matches as she had a career-best 15 against KSU.
The Bucs are.1-4 all-time against the Eagles after being swept earlier this season, while ETSU is 8-0 all-time against Stetson with a sweep of the Hatters already this year.
FGCU (12-10, 11-4 A-Sun) comes into the match having dropped three of its last four contests including losses to Florida Atlantic, Jacksonville and Lipscomb. The Eagles are led by Jelena Simic who is fourth in the conference in kills per set averaging 3.49 with 269 kills on the season.
The Hatters (1-21-, 0-15 A-Sun) have struggled in 2009 as they are facing their worst finish in the school's history with only one win on the season. Stephanie Canfield leads Stetson with 132 kills, while Anna Becker has 228 digs.
