JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Oct.. 28, 2008) - After going up 2-0, the ETSU volleyball team was unable to put the match away as the Bucs were defeated by Western Carolina in five sets Tuesday night in Brooks Gym, 3-2 (25-17, 25-18, 20-25, 16-25, 12-15).

The Bucs (8-15, 5-9 A-Sun) had four players with double-digit kills as Lauren Baufield (Plymouth, Minn.) led the way with 16 kills. Jamie Stancliff tallied 13 kills on the night hitting .522 (13-1-23). Erin Ryan (Davie, Fla.) and McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) also had double-digit kills and they both had ten.

Junior Amanda Youell (Middleburg, Fla.) quarterbacked the ETSU offensive as she collected 44 assists, nine kills and seven digs, while Jen Neice (Allen, Texas) led the Bucs defensively with 13 digs.

ETSU jumped out to an 8-3 lead in the first set after a four-point run, and never looked back in the set as the Bucs went on to win the set, 25-17. Barber led the way as she had six of the Bucs 20 kills, hitting an amazing .714 clip (6-1-7).

In the second set it was all ETSU again, as the Bucs went on a seven-point run to make the score 15-8. The Bucs extended the lead to 21-10 after a couple Barber kills. The Catamounts tried to mount a rally as they cut the ETSU lead to 23-18 after a five point-run, but it was not enough as the Bucs held on to take the set, 25-18, and had a 2-0 lead going into the break.

Play was back and forth at start the third set as there were four lead changes and ten ties, but with the score tied 15-all Western Carolina went on a five point run to go up 20-15. The Catamounts held on to the lead as they took the third set 25-20.

Western Carolina carried the momentum from the third set into the fourth set as the Catamounts went up 15-8 after runs of three and four points. The Bucs got a couple late kills from Stancliff and Baufield, but it was not enough as Western Carolina took the fourth set 25-16.

In the deciding set, ETSU looked as if they had regained the momentum taking an early 6-3 lead, but a four-point by Western Carolina run put the Catamounts ahead 7-6. Whitney Cogburn (Kingsport, Tenn.) tied the match at 7-7 with a powerful kill, but Western Carolina regained the lead after a couple Buccaneer errors. Western Carolina put the match away on a Brittany Lysik kill to make the final, 15-12.

The Bucs are back in action on Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. as they head to Jacksonville, Fla. to take on conference opponent North Florida. Please visit www.ETSUBucs.com for more information on ETSU volleyball and all other Buccaneer athletic news.
