A look back at the 2008 volleyball season

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Dec. 3, 2008) - The ETSU volleyball team had its share of ups and downs in the 2008 season, but came on late to finish the season strong making it to the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Tournament.

The Bucs (12-20, 7-13 A-Sun) finished the season winning three of their last four matches, including an upset of fourth-seeded Mercer, 3-2, in the A-Sun Championships. The win was the first ever A-Sun Tournament victory, and the first postseason win for the Bucs under head coach Lindsey Devine. Freshman McKayla Barber (Columbus, Ind.) earned All-Tournament Team honors for her performance against the Bears as she led the team with 15 kills.

Amanda Youell (Middleburg, Fla.) had the ETSU offense going late in the season as she had a stellar performance in the last week of the regular season totaling 99 assists in the wins over USC Upstate and Campbell. The junior led the team with a triple-double and four double-doubles on the season.

ETSU faced some tough competition during the season facing three NCAA tournament participants and two conference champions. With a young squad, the Bucs rallied back at Campbell down 13-10 in the final set to pull off five straight points and win the match.

Other highlights included a sweep over the conference front-runner North Florida on Sept. 20, and the placement of Barber to the A-Sun All-Freshman Team. The future looks bright for the Bucs as all 13 players will be back in 2009 to make a run at their second conference title in the last four seasons.
