Tough weekend for ETSU volleyball ends with loss to Cleveland State

Saturday, September 06, 2003

Valparaiso, Ind. (Sept. 6, 2003) --A rough weekend and a rough Saturday came to end for the East Tennessee State volleyball team, following a 3-0 loss to Cleveland State (6-1). The Buccaneers, who fall to 1-5 this season, were defeated 30-22, 30-16, and 30-21, marking the second loss of the day for ETSU. The Bucs were swept by Valparaiso, host of this weekend's Popcorn Classic, by a score of 3-0 earlier in the day, as the Crusaders remained undefeated at a perfect 7-0. "Our passing really hurt us this weekend," said head coach Lindsey Devine. "We can't take anything away from the teams we've played. We were right in there for a couple of points, but we just couldn't seem to jump ahead of our opponents." ETSU, coming off a 3-0 loss to Indiana State on Friday night, was defeated by Valpo in consecutive games (30-14, 30-24, 30-19). The competition will only get more difficult for the Buccaneers when they travel to Knoxville next weekend for the Tennessee Lady Vol Classic. Besides taking on intra-state rival Tennessee, ETSU will face the likes of Big Ten opponent Michigan and Big West up-and-comer Cal State Fullerton.
