Buccaneer Volleyball falls to Michigan in opener of Lady Vol Classic

(Sept. 12, 2003) - The East Tennessee State volleyball team fell to the Michigan, 3-0, Friday night in the opener of the Toyota of Knoxville Lady Vol Classic hosted by the University of Tennessee from Stokely Athletic Center in Knoxville, Tenn. Michigan was overpowering in game one, winning by a score of 30-16. The Wolverines (4-3) had an attack percentage of .533 in the first game, compared to .118 for the Bucs (1-6). Michigan continued their strong play in the final two games, winning game two 30-15 and game three 30-19. The Wolverines had a .429 attack percentage in each of the final two games, while the Buccaneers posted a -.125 percentage in game two and .143 in game three. Senior outside hitter Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.) and junior outside hitter Karen Freeburg (New Castle, Ind.) tied for the team lead with 10 kills each. Freeburg had a double-double, as she also led the Bucs with a match-high 11 digs. Sophomore Kristi Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) paced the Bucs with 18 assists on the evening. Erin Moore had a strong match for the Wolverines, leading the team with 18 kills against just two errors. Lisa Gamalski had a match-high 39 assists while Jennifer Gandolph led the team with seven digs. A key stat in the match was that Michigan had 15 blocks compared to one for the Buccaneers. The Bucs return to action on Saturday in the second and final day of the Toyota of Knoxville Lady Vol Classic. ETSU will play host team Tennessee at 1 p.m. before playing Cal State Fullerton at 5 p.m. from Stokely Athletic Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
