The Appalachian State volleyball team defeated East Tennessee State in five games -- 30-27, 30-26, 32-34, 26-30, 15-13 --at Varsity Gym Tuesday night. The Buccaneers (5-11, 3-5 SoCon) were led by Nicole Ryan (Etiwanda, Calif.), who recorded 26 kills in the effort. Kristi Robinson (Knoxville, Tenn.) notched a game high 63 assists. Meghan Connolly (Solon, Ohio) and Sara Scandiffio (Purcellville, Va.) added 13 kills a piece. The Mountaineers (10-10, 4-4 SoCon) were led by Katherine Dean who tied a career-high with 22 kills and had 12 blocks. Starla Gustafson also set a career high by talling 56 assists in the match. Freshmen Kali Rumberger and Chrissy Finch added 17 kills and 16 kills, respectively. Appalachian had to hold off a pair of late charges to take the first two games 30-26 and 30-27. Game three saw a swing in momentum as East Tennessee State battled a spirited crowd and held the Mountaineers down 32-34. The Lady Bucs carried that confidence into game four and came back in the later stages of the match to win 26-30, as the Mountaineers were forced to a game five. In the deciding game, Appalachian's Dean took over up front. She helped the Apps build a six point lead on two solo and three block assists in the final frame. After a timeout, ETSU battled back once again. East Tennessee was unable to get any closer than two points in the final game as Appalachian won the match. With the first game of East Tennessee State's five-game road stint out of the way, the Buccaneers are looking to redeem themselves at UNC Greensboro Friday, Oct. 11.
