SPARTANBURG, S.C. (November 22, 2002) - East Tennessee State University's Nicole Ryan was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year as voted upon by the SoCon head coaches. The freshman from Etiwanda, California was second in the SoCon in kills per game averaging 4.03 with 468 total kills on the season. Ryan started all 116 games this season and led the Buccaneers in total kills (468), kills per game (4.03), attempts (1291) and attacking percentage (.220). Georgia Southern outside hitter Martina Veiglova earned SoCon Player of the Year honors, while Eagles head coach Kerry Messersmith earned Coach of the Year. ETSU will face College of Charleston today at 4:30 p.m. in the first round of the Southern Conference tournament in Davidson, N.C. Charleston, who finished second in the SoCon this season, defeated the Buccaneers in both meetings earlier this year.
