Volleyball announces 2003 schedule

Tuesday, June 17, 2003

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (June 17, 2003) - East Tennessee State volleyball has released its schedule for the upcoming 2003 season. The Buccaneers will compete in 31 regular-season matches, which will also include four highly competitive tournaments starting with Virginia Tech's Hokie Classic. ETSU opens the Hokie Classic on Aug. 29, against Campbell at 5 p.m., and will then take on Miami (Ohio) and host Virginia Tech on Aug. 30. Head coach Lindsey Devine and the rest of the Bucs will then travel to Radford on Sept. 2, before heading to the Valparaiso Popcorn Classic, which will be held Sept. 5-6. At the Popcorn Classic, ETSU is scheduled to play Indiana State, Valparaiso and Cleveland State. "Playing so many nationally recognized teams to begin the season requires the team to come to preseason with a discipline to work extremely hard," said Devine. "By exposing the team to a high quality of play, the freshmen will quickly learn what is required of them in Division 1 volleyball." Next up for the Buccaneers will be the Tennessee Lady Vol Classic, where ETSU will face host Tennessee, Cal State Fullerton and Michigan. On Sept. 17 the team will play its first Southern Conference match at 7 p.m. in Chattanooga. The Bucs will then complete their 2003 regular season tournament play at Clemson versus Charleston Southern, University of Illinois-Chicago, and host Tigers. "What we learn individually in the early part of the season," added Devine, "will make each player mentally stronger, physically tougher thus benefiting our team and our goals of winning conference games." Two more conference matches on the road will follow - at Appalachian State and at Western Carolina - before ETSU makes its first appearance at home. The 2003 squad will play a total of eight home matches at Brooks Gym located on the ETSU campus. The home opener is scheduled for Oct. 3 versus Davidson with a 6 p.m. start time. The Bucs' regular-season finale will be at home on Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. against conference newcomer Elon. ETSU hopes to wrap up its season with a strong finish at the 2003 Southern Conference Volleyball Championships held Nov. 21-23 at Chattanooga. "With the core of existing team members and the addition of enthusiastic incoming players," said Devine, "this team will represent ETSU with the upmost competitive desire to succeed in every aspect of their volleyball lives."
