Georgia Southern Hands Volleyball First Home Loss, 3-0

Johnson City, Tenn. -- Georgia Southern defeated East Tennessee State 3-0 (30-25, 30-25, 33-31) in a matchup of two of the best teams in the Southern Conference Saturday afternoon from Brooks Gym. The loss snaps ETSU's ten-match winning streak and their seven-match home winning streak. The first game was a exciting back-and-forth game, with the teams trading points throughout. The Bucs held a 12-9 advantage midway through game one, but the Eagles would fight back to tie the game at 15 and eventually take the lead 19-18. Georgia Southern would cruise from there, taking game one, 30-25. Georgia Southern jumped out to a 9-3 advantage to begin game two, but the Bucs began to chip away at the Eagle lead. GSU held the lead throughout the game, but the Bucs would cut the lead to as few as three at 24-21. The Eagles would take six of the last ten points to win game two, again by a 30-25 score. Georgia Southern jumped out to a 6-2 lead, but the Bucs would come right back and tie the game at seven. The Bucs would then take a small lead, but the Eagles would then tie the game again at 13. From then, ETSU would begin to build a small lead, growing to be as large as four points at 28-24. Georgia Southern would then win four straight points to tie the game. Georgia Southern would then win five of the next eight points to take the final game 33-31. The Bucs were led by freshman outside hitter Karen Freeburg (Newcastle, Ind.), who led the team with 12 kills against just two errors. Senior setter Carey Cavanaugh (Munroe Falls, Ohio)tallied 31 assists, and added six kills and no attack errors. Sophomore outside hitter Kate Steidle (Waynesboro, Va.) had a team-high 11 digs. The Eagles were led by outside hitter Martina Veiglova, who had a match-high 17 kills and also added six digs. Georgia Southern had two setters that had 20-or more assists, Amanda Brooks leading the way with 24 and Kim Foytich adding 20. Outside hitter Megan Lippi also had a great match with a match-high 15 digs and eight kills against no attack errors. The Buccaneers return to action as they face Western Carolina Monday night at 7 p.m. Georgia Southern will next travel to Stetson Tuesday night for a 7 p.m. match.
