Horner breaks up no-hit bid in seventh

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (April 7, 2013) – Heather Parker limited the ETSU softball team to just one hit and Lipscomb walked away with a series sweep by taking the finale, 7-0, Sunday afternoon from Betty Basler Field.

Parker (8-9) brought a no-hitter into the seventh inning and Casey Horner (Whitesburg, Tenn.) broke up the bid with a single to left-center. It did little to affect Parker’s final line as she allowed just one walk and the one hit while striking out eight. Parker also tossed a shortened one-hitter in Saturday’s second game which the Bisons won 8-0 in five.

Lipscomb (20-18, 9-6 A-Sun) hit two homers Sunday beginning with Gracey Aguirre’s third of the season to leadoff the second and put the Bisons on top. Paige Neely launched her first round-tripper of the year to leadoff the fifth and put LU on top by six. Neely and Aguirre each finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Neely added a triple off the top of the center field wall to complete the day with two RBIs.

Brittany Elmore added the final LU run, becoming the second Lady Bison of the day to triple on a ball that careened back into play off the very top of the wall. Elmore’s triple hit off the fence in right, scoring Bree Thurman.

Junior Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas) was charged with all seven of Lipscomb’s runs. The ETSU (10-24, 0-14 A-Sun) ace didn’t have her best stuff on Sunday, allowing eight hits and walking four while striking out three. Wolff (4-13) did go the distance and has pitched 10 consecutive complete games.

ETSU had three batters reach base in the game. Senior Sam Lower (Sebring, Fla.) reached on an error in the third and classmate Tara Hartnett (Snellville, Ga.) worked a leadoff walk in the sixth to go along with Horner’s hit.

The Buccaneers face a tough task in their next outing, going up against league-leading USC Upstate (32-3, 13-1 A-Sun) on Wednesday in Spartanburg, S.C. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
