MACON, Ga. (Feb. 18, 2013) – Leading the ETSU softball team to three wins by hitting .647 at the College of Charleston Classic, including a game-winning home run against the Cougars, junior Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.) was named the Atlantic Sun Conference Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Monday.

Baird began her outstanding weekend by hitting 3-for-4 with an RBI to help the Bucs to their first win of the season, 6-0, against Towson. The junior slugger’s biggest at-bat came on Saturday with ETSU trailing CofC, 9-8, in the seventh. After Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas) reached on a single, Baird stepped up and drove out what proved to be the game-winning home run and her first long ball of the season.

When the weekend was all said and done, Baird was 11-for-17 at the plate with three runs, four RBIs, four doubles and the homer. The junior is now hitting .577 on the year to rank No. 2 in the conference and has reached base in all nine games. Baird also leads the Bucs with an .846 slugging percentage and .633 on-base percentage.

The A-Sun Softball Player of the Week award is ETSU’s first since Annie Martin was given the honors the week of May 4, 2009.

The ETSU softball team opens the home season this weekend, welcoming Siena College for a three-game series at Betty Basler Field.
