Softball Championships set for this weekend, Bucs face Georgia Southern in first round

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 6, 2003) -- East Tennessee State has garnered a No. 5 seed at this year's Southern Conference Softball Championships in Chattanooga, Tenn. The Buccaneers will play fourth-seeded Georgia Southern in the first game of the tourney, which will be held this Thursday, May 8 at 10 a.m. ETSU and Georgia Southern both finished 10-10 in Southern Conference play, while the Bucs are the hottest team going into the tournament. ETSU has won its last six games that include back-to-back sweeps over conference opponents Furman and Appalachian State. The Buccaneers went 1-2 versus GSU this season. The squad won 4-2 over the Eagles in the first game of a doubleheader back on April 18, but lost the nightcap 5-3. On April 19, ETSU fell by a score of 8-7. The top seed in the SoCon Tournament went to College of Charleston, which won the regular-season outright. The Cougars finished with a record of 42-9 overall and 16-4 in league play. If ETSU wins its first game on Thursday, the Bucs will then play the winner of College of Charleston and No. 8 Appalachian State at 10 a.m. on Friday. The eight-team tournament is a double-elimination format with each team playing a miniumum of two games. Competitition gets underway on Thursday, May 8 and will conclude with the championship on Saturday, May 10.
