Sunday, March 18, 2001

Johnson City, Tenn. -- Chattanooga pitcher Beth Alexander pitched a no-hitter as the Mocs defeated the East Tennessee State Buccaneers 7-0 Sunday afternoon from Kiwanis Park to earn a series sweep.

Alexander was nearly perfect as she pitched seven innings, striking out 13 and allowing just one walk. Buccaneer pinch-hitter Porshia Edmondson was the only ETSU batter to safely reach base, drawing a walk in the bottom of the sixth. Her mound counterpart, ETSU’s Tiffany Vandergriff pitched six innings, allowing seven runs on seven hits, striking out four.

Chattanooga opened up the scoring in the top of the first. Catcher Jaci Welsh hit a leadoff double to right field and was subsequently moved up to third on a grounder to short by second baseman Dana Reed. Welsh would score by beating the tag by Buccaneer catcher Danielle Richardson on a bunt by Moc first baseman Angela Brewer. Chattanooga then loaded the bases on consecutive singles by Leah Tucker and Jolene Martin. Brewer and Tucker would score as an Ashley Herman grounder got under the glove of ETSU shortstop Melonie Collins and into left field.

Chattanooga outfielder Amanda Woodall led off the top of the fourth with a walk and then stole second and third. Woodall scored on a single through the right side by designated player Tara Garner to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Mocs.

In the top of the fifth, Brewer led off with a single. Tucker reached on an error, with April Hudson (running for Brewer) advancing to third. Hudson would score on a single by Martin.

Chattanooga closed out the scoring in the top of the sixth after Welsh and Brewer drew back-to-back walks. They would both score on a single to left by Tucker.

Brewer led the Chattanooga offense, going 1-for-2 with three runs scored, an RBI and a walk. Welsh went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base.

The Buccaneers return to action on Tuesday, March 20 at 3 p.m. when they face South Carolina State in a non-conference doubleheader from Orangeburg, S.C.
