Bucs host No. 23 USC Upstate to wrap up 2014 campaign

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (May 2, 2014) – The ETSU softball team will conclude the 2014 campaign as it hosts league-leading No. 23 USC Upstate this weekend for a three game series beginning Saturday, May 3.

Prior to Sunday's series finale, the Bucs (20-29, 7-15) will honor the careers of the team's three outgoing seniors, Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.), Elliana Cabrera (Hayden, Ariz.), and Katie Wolff (La Grange, Texas).


Sunday's game will serve as ETSU's Senior Day, with Baird, Cabrera, and Wolff being recognized for their career accomplishments prior to first pitch.

This season, Baird and Wolff have paced ETSU's offense, with Baird batting .338 and Wolff leading the Bucs' with a .388 batting average.

Baird leads ETSU in home runs (20), RBI (50), and walks (22), while Wolff has posted a team-best 52 hits, including 10 doubles.

Cabrera has made 11 appearances on the mound for the Bucs over the past two seasons, tossing 30 and two-third innings.

The Spartans (41-5, 19-2) will enter this weekend's series having won 18 of their last 19 contests. USC Upstate boasts the nation's top-ranked collective earned run average, having allowed just 67 runs in 46 contests.

USC Upstate ranks 11th in the country in team batting average (.335), 13th in fielding percentage (0.974), and 20th in scoring (6.35).

As of the latest NCAA statistics report, several ETSU players ranked among the nation's best, with Baird ranking second in the nation with a league-best 20 home runs. Over her last seven games, Baird has gone 11-of-20 at the plate with seven home runs and 15 RBI. Earlier this season, Baird became ETSU's leader for single-season and career home runs.

Freshman Taylor Carter (Brazil, Ind.) ranks second in the country for fewest walks allowed per seven innings (0.69). The Brazil, Ind., native has allowed just 14 walks in 141 and two-third innings on the mound en route to earning a team-best 13 wins.

Meanwhile, junior Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.) ranks seventh in the nation with a five triples. She has also swiped 20 bases in 22 attempts.

Wolff has struck out just three times in 133 at bats, making her the sixth toughest player to strikeout in the nation. Wolff, who leads the Bucs (20-29, 7-15) with a .388 batting average, has gone 18-of-37 at the plate over her last 12 games.
