DELAND, Fla. (April 21, 2013) – Stetson used a five-run second inning to build a lead on the ETSU softball team, and held off the Buccaneers, 7-3, Sunday afternoon from Patricia Wilson Field.
ETSU (12-32, 0-22 A-Sun) got around on Stetson (28-18, 11-11 A-Sun) hurler Meredith Owen for three runs after being shutout in two games on Saturday. A muffed throw put the Buccaneers ahead in the first, while sophomore Casey Horner (Whitesburg, Tenn.) and senior Tara Hartnett (Snellville, Ga.) each hit solo home runs later in the game.
It was not enough. The five-run inning was capped by Brittany Hawn’s two-run homer and Demi Meza added a solo shot of her own later on to seal the series sweep. Junior Katie Wolff (LaGrange, Texas) took the loss (5-18), allowing seven runs, six earned, in six innings, and a career-high 13 hits.
Four different Hatters had multi-hit games, including the home run hitters Hawn and Meza. Jordan Cleghorn was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.
Seven different Buccaneers clawed out ETSU’s seven hits. Redshirt sophomore Nicole Fox (Peachtree City, Ga.) had one of them and stole her team-leading 16th base of the season. Horner’s home run put her one shy of Jackie Baird (Ooltewah, Tenn.) who leads the Bucs with five.
Four games remain on the ETSU schedule, beginning with USC Upstate on Wednesday for a single game at Betty Basler Field. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
