Monday, September 30, 2013
MACON, Ga. (Sept. 30, 2013) – After helping anchor an injury-depleted lineup over the weekend, senior defender Blaike Woodruff (Georgetown, Texas) was named Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Week. Woodruff played 215 of a possible 220 minutes over two games and helped ETSU to its league-best fifth shutout of the season.
With several starters out of action due to injury, Woodruff helped lead the Buccaneers (2-3-3) to a shutout on the road against Radford, playing all 110 minutes of the double-overtime contest.
“This was Blaike [Woodruff]’s strongest performance of the year,” head coach Scott Calabrese said. “Though it was a complete team effort to get the result, Blaike stood out with an excellent game.”
Three nights earlier, Woodruff, played 105 minutes as ETSU narrowly fell to Appalachian State, 2-1, in double overtime.
The Bucs' goals against average of 0.90 leads the Atlantic Sun.
The weekly accolade is the first such honor of Woodruff’s career.
Earlier this season, Woodruff was tabbed as the Atlantic Sun Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
ETSU opens conference play at North Florida Friday, Oct. 4 at 7:00 p.m.
