Saturday, September 14, 2013

ATHENS, Ga. (Sept. 14, 2013) – In the second day of the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, the ETSU men’s tennis team continued its solid play, with two Buccaneer players advancing to the quarterfinals of their respective singles flights.

One day after beating the nation’s No. 4 ranked player, Rogerio Ribeiro picked up a pair of straight-set wins to advance to the quarterfinals of the Division I singles flight.

Ribeiro knocked off Furman’s Alex Christ, 6-1, 6-0, before defeating Pablo Gor of Armstrong, 6-3, 7-6.

Ribeiro will take on Georgia’s Nick Wood Sunday for a trip to the semifinals played later that day. Five of the eight remaining players in the Division I singles flight are representatives of Georgia.

Diego Nunez advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division II singles flight for ETSU, picking up a hard-fought three-set win (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) over Charlotte’s Jordi Massallé Ferrer in the Round of 16.

Nunez was one of five Buccaneer players who had a match go to three sets today.

Sebastian Yllera, Roger Ordeig, David Biosca, and Conner Huertas del Pino each lost in marathon, three-set matches for ETSU.

The doubles duo from Catalonia, Ordeig and Biosca, advanced to the quarterfinals of the Division I doubles flight, as did Nunez and Ribeiro.

ETSU will be in action during Sunday’s third day of competition.

The finals of the singles flights will be played Monday, as will the semifinals and finals of the doubles flights.
