Davis and Zadrazil shine as ETSU sets team shots record

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (Sept. 13, 2013) – Sophomore forward Sarah Zadrazil (St. Gilgen, Austria) scored a pair of goals and dished out a program-record four assists as the Buccaneers extended their win streak to two games with a record-breaking 7-0 road victory over Alabama A&M Friday afternoon. Three of Zadrazil’s assists resulted in scores by junior forward Kristi Davis (Edmond, Okla.), who recorded just the seventh hat trick in ETSU history.

En route to the win, the Buccaneers (3-3-0) tallied a program-best 34 shots, surpassing the previous mark of 33 set last season, also against Alabama A&M.

ETSU wasted little time setting the tone for the match, with Zadrazil giving the Bucs a 1-0 lead on an unassisted goal in the third minute. Six minutes later, the St. Gilgen, Austria, native found the scoring column again, this time being set up by a pass from fellow Austria Senior Women’s Team member, Jenny Pöltl (Steinberg-Dorfl, Austria).

The goals were Zadrazil’s second and third of the season, while the assist was Pöltl’s first of the year.

“It was important for us to start strongly,” ETSU head coach Adam Sayers said following the win. “We continued from there to move the ball quickly, create and take chances, and build up a lead.”

Pöltl found the back of the net in the 27th minute to extend the Bucs’ lead to 3-0. The goal was her second of the season.

“Sarah [Zadrazil] was a constant threat, as was Jenny [Pöltl] coming in from the left side,” Sayers said.

Sophomore forward Hannah Short (Bristol, England), making her season debut for the Bucs, added to ETSU’s lead before halftime, scoring on a pass from sophomore midfielder Alexa Passingham (Leicestershire, England). Short’s 29th-minute goal was the first of her collegiate career.

After taking a 4-0 lead into intermission, ETSU carried its solid play into the second half.

Davis, who recorded a goal in ETSU’s recent win over Winthrop, accounted for each of the Bucs’ three second-half goals, including a pair of scores in the 76th minute.

“Kristi [Davis] finished her chances well,” Sayers said. “Early in the second half, Alabama A&M came into the game more, but we were able to swing the momentum back in our favor.”

Zadrazil picked up the assist on each of Davis’ three goals. The two players share the team lead for goals with three apiece.

Zadrazil’s four-assist performance gives her a team-high six on the season, ranking her among the nation’s Top 10 for most individual assists.

Freshman goalkeeper Anna Yancey (Rosemark, Tenn.) recorded her second shutout in as many starts. In 225 minutes in goal this season, Yancey has accrued an impressive save percentage of .917 and goals against average of 0.40.

The win marked the fourth time in program history the Bucs have scored seven or more goals.
