KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Sept. 11, 2013) – The ETSU volleyball team wraps up preseason tournament play this weekend as the Bucs head to Knoxville for the Comcast Lady Vol Classic.

ETSU (4-4) opens the three-day, four-match tournament Thursday evening when the Blue and Gold get a rematch with VCU. Game time is set for 4:30 p.m. On Friday, the Bucs take on 2012 Sweet 16 participant Wichita State at 10 a.m., before returning to the court at 4:30 p.m., to face in-state rival Austin Peay. The Blue and Gold wrap up the tournament Saturday as ETSU faces Tennessee – another 2012 NCAA Tournament team – at 12:30 p.m. The matches will be played inside Thompson-Boling Arena.

LAST TIME OUT FOR THE BUCS

  • The Bucs snapped a two-game losing skid after posting a five-set (25-20, 24-26, 25-27, 25-23, 15-11) come-from-behind victory over Marshall on Tuesday night in Huntington, W. Va.  
  • Senior Megan Devine (Kingsport, Tenn.) registered her fifth double-double of the season after finishing with 23 kills and 16 digs, while Ivey Rice (Johnson City, Tenn.) recorded a season-high 18 kills. Devine also hit a season-best .368 (23-2-57). Meanwhile, junior Meredith Hardy (Kingsport, Tenn.) extended her streak of registering at least one block to 70 straight matches after ending with eight blocks and 12 kills. Fellow junior Katie Muey (Alexandria, Ind.) tied a career high with 22 digs in the win and Jamie Rutledge (Kingsport, Tenn.) filled up the stat sheet. Rutledge posted 47 assists, seven blocks, five digs, and four kills.
  • As a team, the Bucs finished with season highs in kills (69), assists (68), digs (72), and blocks (14). It also marked ETSU’s first five-set win on the season (1-2).
  • Following the win, head coach Lindsey Devine moved three wins shy of becoming the all-time winningest coach in ETSU history. Devine has compiled 169 career victories.

ABOUT THE OPPONENTS

VCU (5-1)

  • For the second straight weekend, ETSU will face VCU as the Rams dealt the Blue and Gold a tough five-set loss last weekend in Lexington.
  • Sophomore Romana Kriskova – who tallied 27 kills against ETSU – was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on Monday. In three matches at Kentucky, Kriskova averaged 5.00 kills and 1.92 digs per set and hit .345.
  • The Rams rank 14th nationally in blocks per set (2.96) and 25th in service aces per set (1.84), while Kriskova ranks in the top 20 in points (3rd, 5.82), kills (10th, 4.72) and aces per set (17th, 0.64).

Wichita State (5-1)

  • Wichita State, who has swept three of its six opponents this season, was ranked No. 24 in the AVCA Preseason Coaches Poll.
  • The Shockers have won three straight matches, while their lone setback was to Arizona State on Aug. 31.
  • Senior setter Chelsey Feekin was named Missouri Valley Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday after being tabbed MVP of the Portland Nike Invitational last weekend. Feekin, who led Wichita State to the tournament title, averaged 1.67 kills, 9.58 assists, 0.17 aces, 2.25 digs, 1.50 blocks and 2.625 points per set and hit .545 in the three matches.
  • Wichita State was picked to win the MVC in 2013 after making its first Sweet 16 appearance in program history last year.

Austin Peay (2-6)

  • Austin Peay is currently in a 10-match in-state tour, which began last weekend at MTSU. The Lady Govs went 1-3 at the MT Invitational as they defeated North Dakota, but suffered losses to Virginia Tech, UAB, and host MTSU.
  • Senior outside hitter Calyn Hull led the APSU offensive effort with 65 kills (4.06 kills per set) and an impressive .287 attack percentage en route to all-tournament honors. She was one of five hitters to record 25-plus kills on the weekend, including redshirt freshman Sammie Ebright (33 kills, 2.06 per set) and senior middle blocker Lauren Henderson (30 kills, 1.88 per set).
  • Austin Peay was picked to finish second in the OVC West and junior outside hitter Jada Stotts was also selected to the 14-member preseason All-OVC squad.

Tennessee (6-1)

  • The Lady Vols captured the title at the Country Inns & Suites Invitational last weekend in Chattanooga. Tennessee swept Chattanooga and Charlotte, while taking down UNC Asheville and UT-Martin in four sets.
  • Tennessee opened the season taking two of three at the Cincinnati Invitational. The Lady Vols defeated Morehead State (3-2) and Cincinnati (3-0), before being swept by Butler.
  • UT leads the country in digs per set (21.04), while Ellen Mullins is also the national leader in digs per set (6.8).

ETSU VS. THE FIELD

  • The Bucs have played every team in this weekend’s tournament except for Wichita State.
  • ETSU is 0-2 lifetime vs. VCU, 1-4 against Austin Peay, and 4-10 vs. Tennessee.
