Pugh’s perfect run at Walker Cup comes to an end

Sunday, September 08, 2013

SOUTHHAMPTON, N.Y. (Sept. 8, 2013) – After improving his career mark to a perfect 4-0 in Walker Cup matches on Saturday, ETSU junior golfer Rhys Pugh (Pontypridd, Wales) couldn’t keep his unblemished record intact Sunday from the National Golf Links of America.

Pugh, the only member retained from Great Britain and Ireland that defeated the Americans in 2011 at Royal Aberdeen Golf Club, lost both his matches on day two, moving his career mark to 4-2 in two Walker Cup appearances.

In the end, the USA recaptured the Walker Cup with a resounding 17-9 victory over Great Britain and Ireland. It was the USA’s largest margin of victory since the 18-6 decision at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale, N.Y., in 1997. The USA leads the overall series 35-8-1, but is just 7-6 in the last 13 competitions.

In the morning foursomes match, Pugh and Garrick Porteous were defeated by Max Homa and Michael Kim, 1 up. Pugh and Porteous were 1 up thru 16 holes, but Homa and Kim rallied for the win as the GB&I pair three-putted the 17th, then bogeyed the par-5 closing hole after being near the green in two shots. Earlier in the match, Pugh made a 60-foot birdie putt on the second hole, but the Buccaneer missed a 2½-foot putt for par on the 17th hole, which pulled the Americans even. From there, Homa sank a 5-foot putt for par on the final hole to post the win over Pugh and Porteous.

In afternoon singles play, Todd White defeated Pugh 4 & 3. Click here to see Pugh and White’s scorecard.
