Record 19 home events – including 17 regular season home games – along with trips to Georgia Tech, Charlotte and Western Kentucky highlight slate

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (Sept. 3, 2013) – A record number of home games, road contests at Georgia Tech, Charlotte and Western Kentucky, and plans to play a portion of the season’s games at Johnson City’s Freedom Hall Civic Center highlight the 2013-14 ETSU men’s basketball schedule released Tuesday by head coach Murry Bartow.

The Buccaneers will play 17 regular season home games – and a total of 19 home contests when counting exhibition games – which marks a new record for the program. The Bucs have not played this many homes games since the team hosted 15 regular season contests back in 1987-88.

“We think it will be really exciting for our players and our fans to have a record number of home games this season,” Bartow said. “And the games are against very interesting mid-major programs such as Marshall, Winthrop, Valparaiso, Morehead State, Samford and Austin Peay. In the past, we were on the road for much of the early part of the season, but this year there will be several opportunities for our great fan base to come out and see the team.”

In fact, the non-conference home opponents for ETSU this season have a combined 38 trips to the NCAA Tournament all-time, including nine for Winthrop and eight for Valparaiso.

In addition to the release of the schedule, the athletic department also announced that the Bucs would be playing three games inside Johnson City’s Freedom Hall Civic Center this season. Freedom Hall, which is located less than two miles from the main ETSU campus, will host the Bucs’ games against Samford (Nov. 21), Stephen F. Austin (Nov. 23) and Marshall (Nov. 30). Those games will be played as part of a special, multi-tier event known as the Roundball Showcase.

Also, as part of the build up to the season the ETSU athletic ticket office will be promoting a new “More Bucs for your Bucks” campaign, which will highlight the value in purchasing a season ticket this year due to the record number of home games. To purchase tickets, contact the ETSU athletic ticket office at 423-439-ETSU (3878) or visit

News regarding seating, parking and other game-day information for the Freedom Hall contests will be made public at a later date.

The Buccaneers, who have reached postseason play five times in 10 seasons under Bartow, will open with a home exhibition game against Milligan College on Oct. 29, followed by a second exhibition contest against Mars Hill on Nov. 2.

The regular season slate will open on Nov. 8 at Charlotte, as the Bucs take on a 49ers team they defeated on a dramatic, last-second shot by Jarvis Jones (Memphis) back in the early part of the 2011-12 season. ETSU will then play three of its next seven games at Freedom Hall, followed by road games at Austin Peay (Dec. 4) and Georgia Tech (Dec. 7). ETSU will then return to the ETSU/MSHA Athletic Center – or the Mini-Dome – to wrap up the non-conference schedule with home games against Tusculum (Dec. 16), Austin Peay (Dec. 21) and Valparaiso (Dec. 29).

The Bucs will begin their A-Sun schedule on the road at Kennesaw State (Jan. 4), which will start a stretch of 18 straight league games over the final two months of the season before the conference championships begin in early March.
